A Wonderful Life in Autumn

Autumn in Kentucky is wonderful! So much rain and cloudy days mixed in with sunny days to keep me from getting depressed. This place feels so much like home already. I have made lots of wonderful friends and I am grateful for them all. We carved pumpkins with our friends Shannon and Christian. (We also watched the third debate and Election results with them--feel free to bask in our nerdiness)

I know how to get pretty much anywhere I want to go if I know the main streets to take and I'm getting into a groove of how to take care of my home. I had so much time on my hands I even made a cake for Halloween. (Keeping the kitchen clean is still in the works, but none of our apartments have ever been this clean on a regular basis).

We celebrated The Little One's first birthday and marveled that a year has gone by since the excitement of her birth and the aches of the NICU. I guess now is a good time to reflect on that, to be grateful and also move on. I was totally unprepared for what it really meant to be a mother and having a premature baby really messed up the transition. But now I know so much more about myself that sometimes I just want to have another baby so I can do it all over and not have so many regrets. Also, I want my regrets to go away. Regrets aren't worth holding on to--only hope is worth holding on to. Hope in a better tomorrow.

Austin and Sophie getting at the cake!

Back to the birthday bash. We had a little party with The Little One's friends, Austin, Tyson and Sophie and their moms Alicia and Shannon. Of course, The Husband and I were there too! After cake and ice cream we went to the park and had some play time. It was a beautiful day for a birthday party.
The Little One's neat gift from Austin and Tyson!

The Little One is so smart, she is learning the difference between Mama and Dada and possibly using them to address me and her dad. She also tries going from the arms of Mom and Dad to avoid being put to sleep at bed time. Another funny "developmental" milestone: she sits on the floor and lifts one foot off the ground when she has an especially difficult poop to take care of.

The Husband is really enjoying school and he is trying to narrow down his Thesis topic so he can ask one of his professors to be his Thesis chair. He is so awesome, I love my man!

Our new eating habits are going well. Yesterday I made potato parsnip cakes for dinner. They had way too much anise seed in them. Next time I'm omitting that from the recipe, it made the whole thing taste like licorice.

My mother in law is coming to visit us for Thanksgiving! Any fun ideas for Thanksgiving dinner are welcome--I've never done it before. This is the plan so far:

  • Turkey (maybe a small one)
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Artichokes?
  • Asparagus?
  • Home made Cranberry sauce
  • Spiced Cider
  • Dinner Rolls
  • Stuffing (totally from a box)
  • Gravy
  • Pumpkin pie and ice cream
Please leave ideas in the comments!!!!!!

  1. Oh! Sweet Elsie is getting so huge and cute! And I love Dallin's beard. And your hair cut! Your apartment looks so pretty and full of natural lighting. You should make my great-grandmother's sweet potato pie for Thanksgiving! It's a Southern favorite. I make it every year. It has way to much butter in it, but hey! Mo' butta, mo' betta! I'll put the recipe in the next comment.
